Cooker Steam Control Valve

Bill Blackburn

A local food company produces a complete line of soups. In the canning process it is necessary to run the canned product through cookers which both cook the meat, chicken, vegetables, etc. and remove bacteria. The cookers utilize high pressure steam to provide the necessary heat required for cooking and bacteria removal. Selecting the on-off control valves for the high temperature steam can be a challenge. Due to the high cycling rates and high temperatures, a tough valve is required. Steam Pressure in the cooker sometimes exceeds150 PSIG, approaching temperatures of 360 Degrees F and above.

The customer chose our A-T Controls / Triac ball valves to meet the challenge.  Triac ball valves are available with a valve seat which is produced from a mixture of 316 SS powder and reinforced Teflon ( 50/50 seats). The seat is extra tough in high temperature and high cycling applications. The body and ball material chosen was 316 stainless steel in the 150# ANSI version.

The valve operator chosen was our direct mount Triac spring return actuator. Our Triac direct mount actuators mount directly to the ball valve eliminating the need for brackets or couplings. The direct mounting reduces lost motion and dead band. The actuators are provided with Parker–Skinner air pilot valves in the Namur mount style.

Our customer is very satisfied with the performance of the 50/50 seats, and has standardized on Triac ball valves for all future applications.
