Scrubber Makeup Water Filtration
Bill Blackburn

 Application:

A local petroleum refinery had a requirement for an automatic backwashing filter for their scrubber make up water. The source for the makeup water would be a river. The refinery was searching for the most economical solution to filter river water. The filter needed to have the capacity to pass 1300 GPM at a pressure of 120 PSIG. The required particle retention was 5-10 microns. The amount of dirt removal would be 6245 pounds per day. It would be necessary to remove the algae present in the water before filtration took place.

Solution:

The engineering department at RPA Process Technologies decided on the use of the "AFR" series automatic backwashing filter, RPA Process Technologies’ newest design, consisting of eight individual filter tubes arranged in an exclusive circular configuration.

Due to the large flow volume on this application, it was necessary to provide three banks of eight individual filter tubes arranged around an upper and lower manifold completely piped and arranged upon a skid. This arrangement easily passed the required 1300 GPM flow rate expected. The unit was totally automatic thanks to the state of the art PLC control provided. The 5-10 micron retention was accomplished with a five cluster media with polypropylene fabric socks and backwash diffusers to maximize element regeneration. An algaecide was introduced to the river water prior to the filtration process.

This is just one example of RPA Process Technologies capabilities to meet your filtration needs.
