Waste Storage Tanks Freezing
Bill Blackburn

Jordan Valve Application Data:

Refinery:   Waste Hydrocarbon and Water Receptical Freeze Protection System.

A local Phila area refinery experienced problems with their waste storage tanks freezing when temperatures dipped below 32 degrees F.

The tanks measure 50 feet in diameter and are 30 feet high.

The contents of the tanks, waste hydrocarbons and water, are eventually reprocessed in the manufacturing process.

The customer can not tolerate freezing in the tanks.

Solution to the problem:

Using a Jordan MK 80 temperature regulator range 35-90 degrees F, controlling steam to

a thin tube bayonet heater which is inserted straight thru the tank has solved the problem.

Customer will set regulator to 40 degrees F and should be well above freezing this winter.

At times they may set regulator higher depending on ambient temperature.

The regulator is a standard one inch size with a Cv of 9.5 and a 25 ft long capillary and bulb.

Many applications such as this are out there in the refineries.
